Obesity Surgery

According to a recent article from CNN:
http://www.cnn.com/2007/HEALTH/diet.fitness/03/05/diet.teen.surgery.ap/index.html
not only is adult obesity surgery on the rise, but the number of teenagers receiving surgery is now on the rise. From ages 12-19 many teens are undergoing the treatment.

How do you feel about this? Do you agree with obesity surgery? If so, do you agree that it should be allowed for teenagers? Why or why not?

I believe in some cases, surgery is necessary, but I also believe eating healthy and excersising to loose weight should be strongly encouraged, before resorting to surgery. Teenagers need to learn how to portion their meals and excersice frequently, which many dont even know how to do. In todays culture it is hard to stick to a healthy, organic diet, but it is possible, and teenagers need to know how and what to buy to stick to this. All over the media there are advertisments for extremely unhealthy meals, and restraunts, like McDonalds, and other fast food chains. Smaller more nutricious meals should be promoted in our culture, to help encourage teenagers thinking of undergoing surgery to simply turn to a healthier lifestyle. Surgery should not be peoples last resort, there is always other dieting options that they should consider before going under the knife.

I think that only if you have some sort of disorder where you have to get sugery for being obese, it is necessary but there are many teens who wish they could be skinnier and sugery is definitley not the best way to go. i do not believe that it should be allowed unless the patient has tried everything else and has absolutley no other options. the reason i think this is because being obese can be a deeper issue than actually being overweight. they could have problems socially or mentally that result in them over-eating causing them to be obese. this is why i think that once they improve their life by changing their diet and working out or joining a sports team they could rid the problem of obesity and not have to spend thousands of dollars losing the weight in a fake way. also, the teen should realize that just because they weigh more than some others, they can still have friends and they shouldn't label themsleves as a social outcast. if they make an effort they shouldn't have to get surgery for being overweight. Another problem with the surgery is that when you get it, it doesn't mean that you will never become obese again. if you go back to your old eating habits you can go back to your old looks. a lot of teens are just trying to get accepted and they feel as if that they have to be skinny to be accepted.

Well....i dont think its necessaey at all, unless... liek jackiee said, if you have a disorderrr or some cancer where you need to have some fat taken off. buttt i think you would need to excercisee rather then payy loadss of money to do something bad to your body./ especially when you a teenager! for teenagers to do this. is deffinatly not healthy for them. I mean if they were gooing through an eating disorder it would be way worse then this decision. For my magazine article i did research on eating disorders, so if you had that in mind or this... i would ddefinatly choose this, although they both VERYY unhealthy for you

i think children should not gt surgry to make them loss the weight becaseu it is their fault in the first place because. also like jackie said if its a disorder or something. but kids these days dont eat healthy at all because we are so surrounded by such junk food and all this fat in our food. we always have to be watching what we eat or else it goes somewhere on ou body that we dont wnat it to go. we need to work in our five food groups everyday. look at lables before you eat anything for not completly sure that it is healthy ad not all fat. surgery is not nessesary if you tare care of you boby, that is very easy to do.
